چکیده

We are indebted to Drs. ABSTRACT. In view of mis-statements made in the literature, the origin of the refractive index in electron optics is discussed in some detail, and the uniqueness of an expression previously given IS demonstrated. On this basis, some general properties of electron optics are investigated. Whereas the refractive index is unique in terms of the magnetio vector potential A, this itself is arbitrary to some extent. It is shown that A must, for purposes of electron optics, be chosen so as to satisfy Stokes' theorem and that, if it does, no observable effects result from the arbitrariness of A. An expression for the optical path difference is given in terms of the magnetic flux enclosed. The results are applied to a number of questions, viz. the differential equations for tra-jectories, the focusing properties of an axially symmetric field and the interference pattern produced by two converging bundles of rays which enclose a magnetic flux. A relation between ray direction and wave normal is obtained. in light optics the refractive index of a medium is in the first instance an experimental datum, and its accurate value is the basis of W any detailed discussion of the performance of optical instruments, all geometrical electron optics is entirely contained in Lorentz's equation for the forces acting on a moving charge. As a result, all equations for trajectories can be derived directly from that equation by specifying the electricand magnetic fields. Thus the rBle of the refractive index in electron optics is far less obvious than that of its counterpart for light, and in fact different authors have proposed essentially different values of the refractive index for the same field without arousing much

Determination of Refractive Index and Confinement Losses in Photonic Crystal Fibers Using FDFD Method: A Comparative Analysis

In this paper, we present a comparative numerical analysis to determine the refractive index of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) by using FDFD method and used the results to evaluate the confinement losses of PCFs by considering the effects of air-hole rings in the cladding. It is shown that by increasing the wavelength, the imaginary part of refraction index rises, resulting in increase of conf...

Investigation of the Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Susceptibilities and Nonlinear Refractive Index In Pbs/Cdse/Cds Spherical Quantum Dot

In this study the third order nonlinear susceptibilities are theoreticallycalculated for an electron confined in an isolated PbS/ CdSe/ CdS spherical core-shellshellquantum dots. Our calculation is associated with intersubband transitions in theconduction band. We used the effective mass approximation in this study which is asimple and straightforward study of the third-order optical nonlineari...

Control capability of electrolytic concentration on refractive index and dielectric constant of porous Silicon layers

Porous Silicon (PS) samples have been prepared by electrochemical anodization of p-type silicon wafer by varying HF concentrations in the electrolytic solution. The structural, surface morphological, optical and surface composition analysis of the prepared samples were done by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Photoluminescence (PL) and Fourier transform infr...

Tip sensor probe for changing refractive index measurement in small volumes

In this paper, a tapered tip optical fiber probe sensor for localized refractive index (RI) measurements is presented. This sensor’s interaction with analytes is confined to a few micro-meters which makes it a promising candidate for in-vivo or even intra-cellular RI monitoring. This tapered tip was simply fabricated by etching optical fiber with hydrofluoric acid to a conic shape with a sub-m...

Dynamics of Entanglement between Linearly Polarized Photons and π -Electrons in Graphene

In the present article we report the dynamical behavior of entanglement between π-electrons and photons in Graphene. It is shown that the degree of such entanglements depend on the orientation of π-electron momenta relative to the photonic polarization. Moreover, we show that as the detuning between the π-electron transition frequencies and that of the photons is increased, the degree of entang...
